The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson, and starring Martin Freeman (Bilbo, the main character), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Ian Holm (elder Bilbo), Richard Armitage (Thorin), Benedict Cumberbatch (Smaug), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Andy Serkis (Gollum), and Christopher Lee (Saruman). It is the first episode of an upcoming film series consisting of three epic fantasy-adventure films directed by Peter Jackson and based on J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Hobbit. The two other episodes are, by subtitle, The Desolation of Smaugand (2013) and There and Back Again (2014). The series will act as a prequel trilogy to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003) whose main character is Bilbo's nephew, Frodo.
